The new volume, 'Saints' acknowledges for the first time that I have seen in church literature some important facts about the early movement, including the existence of the Strangite movement and that Joseph was anointed King by the council of the 50. It seems like an important step forward in terms of honesty and transparency, but there are still some parts of the narrative which seem intentionally deceptive.
Take for example:
Seven years later, Emily recorded her experience of watching Brigham speak to the Saints, testifying how much he looked and sounded like Joseph on the stand. In the years to come, dozens of Saints would add their witness to hers, describing how they saw Joseph’s prophetic mantle fall on Brigham that day.
They fail to note that in the detailed journal entry that Woodford kept of the meeting, no such transformation was mentioned. Nor do they mention that some of the witnesses who would collaborate this claim weren't even at the said meeting. Furthermore they fail to link to the dialogue article which is the most thorough and accurate regarding this issue.
Another example:
More musket balls flew into the room, and Joseph fired haphazardly at the mob while John used a cane to beat down the gun barrels and bayonets thrust through the doorway.
So they mention that Joseph had a gun and used it, which is great, but they fail to mention that at least 2-4 members of the mob were shot, probably by Joseph. They fail to mention that John Taylor stated that 2 in the mob were killed. I don't really blame them for the latter, because all indications are that John Taylor was wrong, but why not mention that 2-4 of the mobsters were shot by Joseph?
“O Lord, my God,” he cried. His body lurched forward and he pitched headfirst out the window.
Ok. This is what Joseph said, and by all accounts this is accurate. What they failed to mention is that he had his hands held high and that he was giving the masonic cry for help. This was even published in the LDS newspaper at the time, so at one point Mormons were willing to admit to this.
I came away a little disappointed. I guess the word that FairMormon would use is 'spin'. The facts are not wrong, but there's a little too much spin for my taste.
