Asianet is an Indian pay television channel which broadcasts mainly Malayalam-language television series. Headquartered in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala,[1] the channel is part of Asianet Communications, owned by Star India. It was the first privately-owned Malayalam-language channel in the country.
The channel was launched in 1993 with a broadcast of only three hours per day, with the rest of the Tie showing selective programs from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and CNBC. By late-1994, the channel increased its broadcast time to 12 hours per day and later to round-the-clock broadcasting. Asianet was the first private TV channel of India to do 'live' news broadcasting from its Subic Bay uplink centre. In early-1995, the uplink was shifted to Singapore where it attained full operational status. With a change in the broadcasting policies of the Government of India, Asianet started an uplink from Chennai through VSNL. From 15 July 2002, Asianet had its own earth station at the Asianet Studio Complex in Puliyarakonam, Thiruvananthapuram.
Its headquarters were located in Chennai. Its first owners were Raji and Sashi Kumar Menon. Asianet Communications's majority share was later bought by Jupiter Media and Entertainment Venture, owned by Anoop Sree Ayroor. In 2008, Star India purchased the majority of shares in Asianet Communications.[2][3] In 2013, Star completely acquired the channel.

Asianet Star Communications (ASCPL) is an Indian media business founded in 30 May 1996 which was initialy called Asianet Communication Ltd which later merged with media outlets, Vijay Television and Asianet Communications, wholly owned subsidiaries of Star India. It is headquartered in Trivandrum, India,[1] and owns several television channels, including Asianet (1993), the first privately owned satellite channel broadcasting in Malayalam, Asianet Plus, Asianet Middle East, Star Suvarna, Star Suvarna Plus and Asianet Movies.
The outlet was completely acquired by Star India in the early 2010s.[2]
Asianet News and Suvarna News 24×7 channels are not a part of the STAR India owned Asianet Star Communications Pvt Limited.
Asianet Star Communications Pvt Ltd was originally incorporated as a private limited company named 'Asianet Communications' in New Delhi on 5 March 1991. The company began operations in 1991 with the promotion of Asianet, the group's flagship Malayalam-language television channel . At the time, satellite television broadcasting in India was at its birth stage. Asianet Communications undertook the cable distribution of the channel as its own wholly owned subsidiary, ensuring maximum coverage across Kerala.
Asianet was launched in August 1993, at a time when the only Malayalam language television channel available was the government-owned Doordarshan. The channel had hired a transponder on the Russian Ekran satellite, with an up-link from the USSR. Later, the company hired a transponder on the Rimsat satellite, and shifted the up-link to Subic Bay in the Philippines and then to Manila. Initially, its broadcast lasted only three hours a day, which was gradually increased to 12 hours by late 1994, and finally to 24/7 broadcasting. In early 1995, the uplink was shifted to Singapore where it attained full operational status. With a change in the broadcasting policies of the Government of India, Asianet started an up-link from Chennai through VSNL. From 15 July 2002, Asianet had its own earth station at the Asianet Studio Complex in Puliyarakonam, Thiruvananthapuram. Over the course of more than two decades of operations, Asianet has developed its own in-house production facilities and now has full-fledged production studios in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode.[citation needed]
In 2003, the company launched Asianet Global, targeting the huge expatriateMalayalee population in the Middle East. The channel was rebranded as Asianet News. On 23 July 2005, Asianet launched its third channel, Asianet Plus, an entertainment channel. Later, the company launched a set of channels in other languages such as Kannada (Suvarna TV) and Telugu (Asianet Sitara).
The channel moved its headquarters to Chennai on 3 December 1997. The company's majority share was then acquired by Jupiter Media and Entertainment Venture. In 2008, Star India became a majority shareholder in Asianet Communications.[3][4] In July 2012, Asianet, launched Asianet Movies, a channel focused towards Malayalam-language movies.[5][6]
In 2014,Star India buys the remaining share from jupiter capitals and asianet become fully owned subsidiary of Star India. The deal does not include news channels of jupiter capital namely asianet news and suvarna news and thus asianet news and suvarna news have no relation with star india
On 17 January 2019, Star India merged Asianet Communications Ltd and Vijay Television Ltd into Asianet Star Communications Pvt Ltd.
